Villa Adriana and the early excavations of the 17th/18th century

Birgitta Hoffmann

Villa Adriana is one of the best known imperial villas, closely associated with Hadrian. But how was this villa site discovered and how did British tourists get to hear about it. This lecture is looking at the adventurous history of the early excavations, the creation of the Papal collections of Roman Antiquities and how the Grand Tourists responded to the amazing finds.
