The villa of the Quintili – a rural idyll on the Via Appia

Birgitta Hoffmann

The villa of the Quintili (relatives of the Antonine Emperors) is possibly the easiest to reach and best preserved of the suburban villas of Rome. Sited next to the Via Appia, it sports its own racecourse, multiple baths, aqueduct and huge gardens. The furnishings of the villa were so impressive that it is marked on old maps of the area as ‘Nova Roma’. This lecture is taking a short tour of the area.
