The Romans like to document themselves on stone – their burials, the achievements in buildings, in politics, in civil engineering, their relationship with the Gods. For this they used a formulaic form of Latin, often abbreviated and usually without the case endings, making it easy to understand, even for those without much Latin. Using inscriptions from Roman Britain will introduce you how to read simple Roman inscription and to the basic concepts of the Latin language.
