France’s Retreat from Empire

This course will be offered through the online conference facility Zoom (https://zoom.us/).

Four sessions, starting on Tuesday 28th July 2020, 10am to 12 noon

Cost: £5 per session

Why was France’s retreat from empire so difficult and violent.  This 4-week course starts with the Liberation of France in 1944 and looks at the experiences of Indo-China, Algeria and other French decolonisations up to the 1970s.  There will be plenty of film footage including from Gilo Pontecorvo’s classic film The Battle of Algiers.  One session will focus upon Frantz Fanon, author of The Wretched of the Earth, a hugely influential figure for questions of national liberation and questions of race and empire.
