Roman and Early Medieval Cologne

Birgitta Hoffmann

Roman Cologne developed from the first arrival of the Romans in the Augustan period as a legionary fortress and fleet base. But by the time of Claudius reign, it had become a thriving town, which would grow to the be the largest Roman town on the Rhine and the Centre of the Imperial Cult for the Rhine provinces.
Of huge economic importance because of its fertile hinterland with its many natural sources, its surviving monuments speak of far reaching trade as well wealth preserved and increased over a generation and a geographical importance that ensured that it became the capital of the emerging Frankish kingdoms.
