Eminent Victorians – Three linked day schools

Creina Mansfield, Alan Sennett and John Cochrane

‘The history of the Victorian Age will never be written: we know too much about it.’ (Lytton Strachey)

Taking Strachey’s irreverent biographical commentary on the Victorian age as our starting point, these three day-schools explore familiar and less familiar aspects of the history, literature and culture of the Victorians.  Apart from Strachey’s selection of Cardinal Manning, Florence Nightingale, Dr Arnold and General Gordon, we will also be looking at historians, writers and artists.  We will look at commentators on the city, questions of crime, poverty, urbanisation, public health, immorality, social class, power and laissez-faire Capitalism.   The day schools will be illustrated with images, text and film.
