Where do Togas come from? – Rome’s Felting and Cloth industry

Birgitta Hoffmann

Ancient Rome’s myth of the women providing the cloth needed in the house by spinning and weaving in the Atrium had by the first century AD become exactly that a myth. Instead, the textile industry has become a very well organized and lucrative trade that provided income for large parts of the empire, with ‘brand names’ or protected ‘areas of origin’, that seem sometimes modern in its appearance. We will be looking at the evidence of this industry from the 1st-4th century AD.
