“Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the War Room!” President Merkin Muffley (Peter Sellers)
American Air Force General, Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden), plans to start a nuclear war with the Soviet Union to stop a Communist conspiracy to put fluoride in the water supply, thereby threatening our “precious bodily fluids”. Loosely based on Peter George’s 1958 novel Red Alert and released at the height of the Cold War, Stanley Kubrick’s film brilliantly satirises the way government and military incompetence could result in a nuclear holocaust.
We will discuss the film in sections, looking at the literary and historical background as well as the making of the film and its significance.
