Mayen: Making Millstones for the Roman (and Medieval) world

Dr. Birgitta Hoffmann

Roman millstones were ubiquitous because they were needed every day. From the large horse-driven hourglass millstones of Ostia and Pompeii to the Millstones that were driven by the watermills of Barbegal, but mostly the handmills that were an essential part of every civilian household and every military barracks.

These stones could come from any suitable quarry – lava or millstone grit or even just certain sandstones, the variety is endless. However, in the midst of this huge variety of local stone, there is one producer of Lava querns that over centuries managed to distribute their products through most of the Northwestern provinces: The quarries in and around Mayen the Eifel in Germany.

This dayschool explores what made these quarries so special and what we know about the distribution, the ownership, and the conditions under which these stones were produced and the effect the quarries had on the surrounding area.
