Xanten/Colonia Ulpia Traiana was long held to be Germany’s only colony to be founded completely on the green field. Research in the last 20 years has completely changed our view of the site and its history. Instead of a town full of Roman new arrivals settled on the banks of the Rhine, we now have a town that started as a vicus to a legionary fortress, then became civitas capital, then was refounded as a colonia and finally had to be rebuilt in the late third century. Today it is the largest Roman city not to have been built over and a centre of research into the Romans on the Rhine.
