Adventurers in Archaeology: The Real Indiana Jones

Kevin Harrison

Who was the real Indiana Jones?

Explore the real stories of adventure, courage and danger in the ‘Heroic Age’ archaeology. Meet the men (and often their wives) who rediscovered the Ancient Near East. Here are the genuine tales of adventure and ‘daring-do’ behind our knowledge of the civilisations of the ancient Near East. Stories that involve deceit, danger, and ruthless ambition in the pursuit of fame and glory: Indiana Jones?  Indeed!

  • Heinrich Schliemann (1822-90) & Troy: Homer vindicated!
  • Heinrich Schliemann & Mycenae: the Palace of Agamemnon, rich in gold!
  • Arthur Evans (1851-1941) & the Minoans: the lair of the Minotaur
  • Thomas Bruce, Lord Elgin (1766-1841) & the Parthenon Marbles: and his crime?
  • August Mariette (1818-81) & Egypt: The man who made Egypt live.
  • Mortimer Wheeler (1890-1976) & Maiden Castle: archaeology in the modern age.

Each class will be accompanied with illustrations and some of the surviving accounts of the archaeologists themselves.
