Late Roman hoards beyond the frontier Raiders, traders or allies?

Birgitta Hoffmann

While the Late Roman archaeology concentrates unsurprisingly on the large amount of evidence from the Empire and its frontiers, there is a striking group of finds, mainly hoards of silver and sometimes gold vessels, that were found beyond the Roman Empire, but are clearly made up of Roman material. The most famous British example is no doubt the Traprain Law Treasure.
How did this material get there? Was there a Roman policy of ‘Overseas Aid’? Where these treasures the result of raiding? What is our evidence for continuing Roman trade beyond the frontier?
