Mother, Wife, Daughter, Business Tycoon – Roman Women during the Empire

Birgitta Hoffmann

Women in the Roman world lived in a society where men recorded events and set the agenda. But despite this women carved out a role of influence and independence for themselves, both inside and outside the family that wouldn’t be achieved in Britain again until the 1970s.  We are going to look at women who became scientists and mathematicians, business women and society ladies as well as  power brokers, but also women who felt fulfilled by society’s expectation of a life as wife and mother.
