Mornings with a Masterpiece: Schubert Song Cycles

Rosemary Broadbent

Schubert’s two narrative song cycles, Die schöne Müllerin (The Fair Maid of the Mill) and Winterreise (Winter Journey), were unique in their time. Their only predecessor was Beethoven’s short sequence An die ferne Geliebte (To the Distant Beloved), but Schubert expanded the concept into a compelling narrative in which weather and landscape mirror the changing emotions of his main character.

Schubert had an unparalleled ability to create atmosphere and psychological depth in piano parts of great economy, and these lecture/discussions will examine his techniques and their magical results. We shall also discuss the mysteries of the narrative in each case, and the relevance of Schubert’s own life to the stories he chose to illustrate.
