Castles of the Crusading Period in the Eastern Mediterranean

Dr. Birgitta Hoffmann

The period of the Crusades (1096-1291CE) saw a huge change in the design and construction of fortifications by every power involved in the conflicts. From the Krac de Chevalier to Sahyun near Lattakia or the Castle of the Knight of Rhodes each demonstrates the resurgence of thinking of castles and their fortification and preparation against sieges in a well-thought-out, nearly scientific way.

This day is going to look at these castles, what sets them apart and how they developed and how they were financed and finally how they influenced Castles away from the Mediterranean.
