MORNINGS WITH A MASTERPIECE: Mozart’s Wind Serenades

Rosemary Broadbent

Music for wind ensembles rang through the streets in Mozart’s Vienna. It was an essential ingredient of social life, especially in the open air, and provided dances, marches and arrangements of the latest tunes from popular opera. It is therefore not surprising to find a long list of works for wind instruments by Mozart, that most sociable of composers.

Masterpieces? Well, perhaps not all of them, but the three works we shall consider are of the highest quality. In addition, K 388 is in C minor, a key Mozart usually reserved for tragic moods, and K 361 is written for an astonishing ensemble of thirteen instruments. The emotional range of these works is as wide as in any concerto or opera, and the craftsmanship is matchless.
