Of Greeks, Heroes and Sybils – the Northern Bay of Naples before Augustus

Birgitta Hoffmann

When people talk about the Bay of Naples they now mostly talk about the Southern part, with Pompeii, Stabiae, and Capri.

However, traditionally the Northern part with Cumae, Misenum, Baiae, Pozzuoli, and Naples is the older and economically more important part of the Bay. It is here that you find the early Greek settlements, the myth of the Sibyl and the Gate to the Underworld, and the rich cemeteries and temples of the pre-Augustan period.

This course will look into this Greek and Etruscan culture that thrived for several hundred years before the Romans discovered Campania as a holiday destination.
