The Emperor Justinian (483-565) was one of the longet lived emperor of the 6th century. His conquests in Italy, Africa and Spain had massive consequences for those provinces, not always in a good way.
But one of the most unusual results of his reign is Prokopius’ list of Justinian’s Buildings, which included churches like Hagia Sophia, Town’s like Justiniania Prima, but also fortresses, many of these sites can still be identified today and this dayschool will go on a tour of these sites and discuss why they caught the attention of his contemporaries.
